A hazardous substance is most simply defined as any substance capable of causing an adverse health effect and may include chemicals, biological agents (e.g. bacteria and viruses) and even substantial quantities of any dust. As a general rule the most common entry route is through Inhalation. Ingestion, Injection and Absorption are the other routes of entry and are less common but controls need to be in place (i.e. no eating in chemical areas) for prevention to be effective. Hazardous substances within an abattoir must be controlled. These substances may be in the form of veterinary medicines, cleaning solutions, biological agents i.e. viruses and bacteria, and dust particles. Harmful health effects that may arise from exposure include respiratory disorders such as asthma; dermatitis (a non-infectious skin condition), zoonotic diseases (transmitted from animals); and irritation or burns to the skin, body and eyes, through the substance being swallowed, absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Substances may have 'acute' (immediate) or 'chronic' effects
Acute harm – A rapid onset, usually after a single exposure to high levels. Often acute harm may be reversed and will recede upon cessation of exposure.
Chronic harm – effects only become after a period of days, months or years and usually after prolonged or repeated exposure to low levels. (not always e.g. blue asbestos). Response is gradual, progressive and cannot be reversed. It may be unrecognized for long periods of time.
